San Pedro’dan Uyuni’ye her gün sabah 03:00’te bir otobüs kalkıyor. Bu otobüse binerseniz, sınırda çok fazla beklemeden öğleden sonra Uyuni’ye varıyorsunuz. Neyse ki ben de fazla beklemedim. Ama nedense, Bolivya’da kalmam için sadece 30 günlük vize verdiler. Gerçi pek önemi yoktu, zaten daha uzun kalmayı planlamıyordum.

Otobüste iki Şilili ve bir İtalyan’la tanıştım. Uyuni’ye varmadan önce kalacak yer ayarlamamıştım. İtalyan gezginin önceden rezervasyonu vardı ama bize yer yoktu ve fiyatları da benim bütçeme göre fazlaydı. Uyuni aslında büyük bir köy gibi. Hatta benim köyüm bile daha büyük olabilir haha. Yani kalacak yer konusunda milyon tane seçeneğiniz yok.

Bolivya Hakkında Küçük Bir Not

Bolivya sınırını geçince beklentilerinizi biraz düşürmeniz gerekiyor. Güney Amerika’nın en yoksul ülkelerinden biri. Otoyol yok. Hostellerde her zaman su olmayabiliyor. İnternet ise neredeyse hiç yok.

Ama Bolivya inanılmaz ucuz. Sadece yemek kültürü çok farklı, o yüzden eğer yemek konusunda çok maceracı değilseniz biraz aç kalabilirsiniz. Son anda olmasına rağmen Uyuni’de kalacak bir yer bulmayı başardık. Daha sonra hemen bir tur acentasına gittik. Uyuni’deki turlar ikiye ayrılıyor: biri sadece Tuz Gölü’nü gezdiğiniz bir günlük tur, diğeri ise çevredeki tüm güzellikleri kapsayan üç günlük tur. Atacama’dan sonra artık mineral bazlı doğal oluşumlar görmek istemedim, o yüzden sadece Tuz Gölü’nü görmeye karar verdim. Şilililer de bana katıldı. İtalyan  arkadaş ise üç günlük tura katıldı. Bir günlük turun ücreti 135 boliviano ($20) idi. Üç günlük tur bunun yaklaşık üç katı fiyataydı.

Bolivya’da ilk dikkatinizi çeken şey koka yaprakları oluyor. Evet, kokain bu bitkiden yapılıyor ama içine birçok kimyasal ekleniyor. Yaprakları çiğnemek sizi sarhoş etmiyor, daha çok kahve etkisi gibi. Bolivya çok yüksek rakımda olduğu için yerel halk koka yaprağını buna bir çare olarak kullanıyor ve ziyaretçilere de ilk önerdikleri şey oluyor. Koka burasının milli bitkisi yani. Herkesin çantasında bir poşet dolusu koka yaprağı var. Birkaç yaprağı ağzınıza atarak posası çıkana kadar ağzınızın kenarında tutarak emiyorsunuz.

Turu ayarladıktan sonra otobüs terminaline gittik. Gerçi “terminal” demek biraz fazla olur, aslında bu sadece otobüs firmalarının yan yana sıralandığı bir sokaktı. Sıradaki rotamız için bilet sormaya başladık. Küçük bir tavsiye: Bolivya’da sana söyledikleri ilk fiyata asla “evet” deme. Her zaman pazarlık yap. Uğraşırsan gerçekten çok ucuza bilet bulabilirsin. Ben de biraz dolaşıp en ucuz seçeneği buldum ve La Paz için bilet aldım.

Uyuni’de tur acentalarının olduğu ana cadde, restoranların da bulunduğu cadde. Tüm turistler burada takılıyor. Hatta bazı gezginler bu caddeye çadır kurup orada kalıyorlar. Atacama’daki Valle de la Luna turunda tanıştığım bazı Fransızlarla burada yeniden karşılaştım. Bir süre sonra buna da alışmaya başladım. Sürekli başka ülkelerde tanıştığım insanlarla tekrar karşılaşıyorum. Bu tür anlar dünyayı gerçekten küçücük bir köy gibi hissettiriyor.

Akşamı bu sokakta geçirdikten sonra sonunda uyumaya hostelimize gittik. Nerede kaldığımızı anlatmayacağım bile. Hostel berbat ötesiydi ama neyse ki sadece bir gecelikti.

Tuz Gölü Turu
Ertesi sabah kalkıp turun buluşma noktasına gittik. Bir cipin içine doluşup yola çıktık.

Turlar yedi kişilik gruplar halinde yapılıyor. İlk durağımız tren mezarlığıydı. Eski trenlerle birkaç fotoğraf çektikten sonra minicik bir köye uğradık. Bu köy neredeyse sadece turistlere el işi hediyelik eşya satmak için var. Sonunda ise Tuz Gölü’ne vardık.

Varınca, Tuz Restoranı’nda öğle yemeği yedik. Öğle yemeklerinden biri (benim için) vejetaryen olacaktı ama tabii ki unutmuşlardı. Bana yiyecek bir şey bulmaları yarım saat sürdü. Neyse, yemekten sonra tuz gölünün derinliklerine doğru devam ettik. Otelin yakınlarında, farklı ülkelerin bayraklarının olduğu bir alan var. Burada bir Türk bayrağı olduğunu duymuştum ama bulamadım. Ülkeden çıkmadan önce ailem bana “ne olur ne olmaz” diye bir Türk bayrağı vermişti. Gerek kalmaz diye düşünmüştüm… Şimdi o bayrak Bolivya’da. ☺

Göl alanına vardığımızda yağmur yağıyordu, bu yüzden her yer suyla kaplıydı. Alan çok büyük. Ortalara doğru ilerlerseniz sadece bembeyaz tuz görüyorsunuz, su varsa da ayna gibi bir yansıma oluşuyor. Gökyüzündeymişsiniz gibi hissediyorsunuz, bulutlarla çevrilmişsiniz gibi. Ortasında dururken de uçsuz bucak beyazlığın içinde başka bir dünyada gibisiniz.

Bir sürü fotoğraf çektikten sonra, yeniden yağmur bastıracak gibi olduğu için Uyuni’ye dönmek istedik. Ama grupta İsrailli bir çift vardı ve mutlaka gün batımını beklemek istediklerini söylediler. Bulutlar yüzünden hiçbir şey göremeyeceklerini anlatmaya çalıştık ama ısrar ettiler. Biz de bekledik. Boşuna. Gün batımını göremedik. Uyuni’ye geri döndük.

Tura çıkmadan önce çantamı hazırlayıp tur ofisine bırakmıştım. Akşam yemeğinden sonra gidip çantamı aldım ve La Paz otobüsüne bindim. Otobüs sabah 05:00’te şehre varacaktı.

Normalde her şeyi önceden planlarım. Ama bu kez arkadaşlarımı dinledim ve La Paz’a varınca bir hostel bulurum dedim.

Hayatımın en kötü kararıydı…

There’s a bus from San Pedro to Uyuni every day at 03:00 a.m. If you take this bus, you’ll arrive in Uyuni in the afternoon (as long as you don’t wait too long at the border). Luckily, I didn’t. But for some reason, they only gave me 30 days to stay in Bolivia. Not that it mattered, I wasn’t planning to stay longer anyway.

On the bus, I met two Chileans and one Italian. I hadn’t found a place to stay in Uyuni before arriving. The Italian guy already had a reservation, but there wasn’t space for us and it was pretty expensive. Uyuni is basically a big village. I mean, my own village might even be bigger. So it’s not like you have a million options to stay.

A Quick Note About Bolivia
You have to lower your expectations once you cross the Bolivian border. It’s one of the poorest countries in South America. There are no highways. Hostels don’t always have water. Internet barely exists.

But Bolivia is super cheap. The food culture is very different, though, so just because it’s cheap doesn’t mean you’ll eat endlessly. Still, with all these conditions, we managed to find a place to stay.

Later, we went to a tour agency. Tours in Uyuni are divided in two: one is a one-day trip to visit the Salt Flats of Uyuni, and the other is a three-day trip that includes all the attractions in the area. After Atacama, I was done with mineral attractions, so I just wanted to see the Salt Flats. The Chilean guys joined me. The Italian went for the three-day tour. The one-day tour cost 135 Bolivianos ($20). The three-day tour is about three times more.

The first thing that catches your attention in Bolivia is the coca leaves. Yes, cocaine is made from coca, but lots of chemicals are added to it. Just chewing the leaves doesn’t make you high, it’s more like coffee. Locals say it helps with altitude sickness. Coca is like the national plant here. Everyone carries a bag full of leaves.

After booking our tours, we went to the bus terminal. Well, I say “terminal,” but really, it’s just a street where the bus company offices are lined up. We started asking around for tickets to our next destinations.

Pro tip: Never say yes to the first price they offer you in Bolivia. Always haggle. If you try hard enough, you can get a really cheap ticket. I asked around, found the cheapest option, and bought a ticket to La Paz.

The main street in Uyuni, where the tour agencies are, is also where the restaurants are. All the tourists hang out there. Some travelers even set up tents and sleep on that street.

I ran into some French guys I had met on the Valle de la Luna tour in Atacama. Totally normal! I always run into people I met in other countries. It really makes the world feel like a small village.

After spending the evening on this street, we finally went to sleep. I’m not even going to mention where we stayed. I don’t even want to remember where I took a shower. The hostel was terrible, but thankfully it was a short stay.

The Salt Flat Tour
The next day, we woke up and headed to the meeting point for the tour. We got into a jeep and started the trip.

The tours are for seven people. First, we visited the train cemetery. After taking some photos with the old trains, we went to a tiny village. It basically exists just to sell handmade souvenirs to tourists. Then, finally, we arrived at the salt flats.

We had lunch at the Salt Dining Room when we arrived. Near the hotel, there’s a place with flags from different countries. I had heard there was a Turkish flag there, but I couldn’t find it. Before I left the country, my family had given me a Turkish flag “just in case.” I thought I wouldn’t need it… Well, that flag is now in Bolivia. ☺

One of the lunches was supposed to be vegetarian (for me), but of course they forgot. I waited half an hour while they tried to find something for me to eat. Anyway, after lunch, we drove deep into the salt flat.

It was raining when we got there, so the salt flat was covered in water. The area is huge. If you drive to the middle, you only see white salt, and if there’s water, it creates a mirror effect. You feel like you’re in the sky, surrounded by clouds. It’s like you’ve died and gone to heaven.

After taking a bunch of photos, we wanted to head back to Uyuni since it looked like it was going to rain again. But there was an Israeli couple in the group who insisted on staying for the sunset. We tried to explain that they wouldn’t see anything because of the clouds, but they still wanted to wait. So we waited, for nothing. There was no sunset. We went back to Uyuni.

Before the tour, I had already packed my backpack and left it at the tour office. After dinner, I picked it up and got on the bus to La Paz. The bus was supposed to arrive at 5:00 a.m.

Normally, I plan everything. But this time, I listened to my friends and decided to find a hostel when I arrived in La Paz.

Worst decision ever.
