Lima’ya vardığımda kalmak için benim gibi gezgin olan Ender’in daha önceden evinde kaldığı bir arkadaşına gittim. Ertesi gün Cusco için otobüsleri sormaya gittik ve aynı güne bilet buldum. Hemen otobüse atladım. Amazonlara gitmek için yine Lima’ya dönmem gerekiyordu. Bir sonraki gelişimde daha uzun vakit geçiririz diye konuştuk ve ev sahibimle vedalaştım.

Uzun otobüs yolculuğundan sonra Cusco’ya vardım. Gönüllü olarak çalışacağım hostele gittim. Ama işler planladığım gibi gitmeyecekti. Beraber çalışacağım ailenin bir seyahat acentesi bulunmakta. Şu anda da iki tane hostel inşa ediyorlar. Konuştuğumuzda bu hostellerden birine duvar resmi yaparım diye konuşmuştuk.

Vardığımda beş tane daha gönüllü vardı. Şartları bana anlattıklarında burada kalmak istemedim.

İki tanesi yeni hostelin duvarlarını boyuyordu ve daha duvarların badanası olmadığı için duvar resmine şu anda gerek olmadığını öğrendim. Bana kahvaltı ve öğle yemeğinin verildiği söylenmişti ama orada sadece öğle yemeğinin olduğunu öğrendim. Kaldıkları yer iç açıcı değildi ve interneti yoktu. En azından acenteleri olduğu için Machu Picchu turuna indirimli giderim diyordum. Ama öğrendim ki acentalarındaki turlar diğerlerine göre daha pahalı ve indirim bile alsam dışarda tur satın almakla aynı paraya gelecek. Böyle olunca Cusco’da birkaç gün kalıp sadece Machu Picchu’ya çıkarsam daha ucuza geleceğini düşündüm. Çünkü Cusco oldukça turistik. Yemek içmek pahalı. Kendime ucuz bir hostel buldum. Çantamı alıp oraya gittim. Yarın şehri dolaşıp Machu Picchu’ya en uygun nasıl gidebilirim diye araştırma yapacaktım. Ayrıca daha önce buraya gelmiş arkadaşlara da nasıl gittiklerini sordum.

Machu Picchu’ya gitmek için birçok seçeneğiniz var. Öncelikle Machu Picchu, Cusco’ya altı saatlik uzaklıkta. Machu Picchu’ya gitmek için ulaşmanız gereken yer Aguas Calientes. Oraya da Cusco’dan otobüs veya trenle ulaşabiliyorsunuz. Fakat maalesef tren çok pahalı. Benim gibi düşük bütçeli bir gezginseniz otobüs yolunu seçmeniz gerekecek. Aguas Calientes’e de karayolu olmadığı için otobüse bindiğinizde gelebildiğiniz en yakın nokta Hidroeléctrica. Otobüs sizi burada bıraktığında Aguas Calientes’e ulaşmak için demiryolunu takip ederek 11 kilometre yani yaklaşık 2 saat yürümeniz gerekiyor. Fakat yol Cusco bölgesinin heybetli dağlarının etrafından dolandığı için yol boyu yorulsanız da asla sıkılmıyorsunuz.

Aguas Calientes’e Cusco’dan varmanız neredeyse tüm gününüzü aldığı için vardığınızda Machu Picchu girişinizi alıp kendinize uyumalık yer bulabilecek kadar enerjiniz kalıyor. Machu Picchu’nun yanında Wayna Picchu isimli kalıntıların olduğu ikinci bir dağ var. Burayı da ziyaret etmek isterseniz ayrıca girişinizi alıyorsunuz.

Machu Picchu’ya çıkmak için yine iki yolunuz var. Birincisi otobüsle çıkmak. Ama yine aşırı pahalı bir seçenek. Diğeri ise İnka Yolu’nu takip ederek 2 saat sürecek bir merdiven tırmanışı. Yorucu ama bedava. ☺ Alana çıktığınızda önceden aldığınız girişler ile ziyarete başlayıp tüm gününüzü burada geçirebiliyorsunuz.

İsterseniz girişte rehber almanız da mümkün. Bir gün daha Aguas Calientes’te kalmak istemiyorsanız maksimum 4 saatte alanı gezip daha sonra önce Aguas Calientes’e, sonra da 15:00’te kalkacak olan otobüsü yakalamak için Hidroeléctrica’ya yürümeniz gerekiyor. Tren kullanıp Machu Picchu’ya otobüsle çıkıyorsanız bol bol vaktiniz olacaktır.

Şimdi gelelim fiyatlara. Hydroelectrico’ya gidiş dönüş otobüs bileti 60 Sol. Sadece Machu Picchu’ya giriş 152 Sol. Wayna Picchu’ya da gidecekseniz toplamda 200 Sol. Otobüsle çıkmak istiyorsanız sadece tek yön 38 Sol. Dönüşe de aynısını ödeyeceksiniz. Tren fiyatlarını bilmiyorum. Pahalı diye bakmadım bile. Turla gittiğiniz takdirde 90 USD ödüyorsunuz. İçinde gidiş dönüş otobüs, ilk günün öğle yemeği, rehber hizmeti, Machu Picchu giriş parası ve bir gece otelde konaklama dahil.

Machu Picchu hakkındaki detaylı bilgilerden sonra kendi hikayeme dönüyorum. Ben verdiğim seçeneklerden en ucuzlarını seçtim. Çünkü tur bile alsanız izlediğiniz yol birebir aynı. Yürümekse yürümek, merdivense merdiven yani. Tura fazla para vermektense hepsini çok daha ucuza kendim yapmaya karar verdim.

Otobüs biletimi hostelden satın aldım. Aguas Calientes çok pahalı dedikleri için kendime marketten gidip 20 Sol tutarında alışveriş yaptım. Ekmek, peynir ve avokado alıp kendime 8 küçük sandviç yaptım. Ayrıca tuzlu ve tatlı kraker ile muz aldım. O kadar yol yapacağım için de bolca su. Böylelikle Aguas Calientes’te çok az yemek yemek zorunda kalacaktım ve yolda acıkırsam da hazırlıklı olacaktım. Otobüste Machu Picchu maceramda benimle olacak Şilili arkadaşla tanıştım. Yol oldukça çetin. Dağlarda dolandığınız için sürekli viraj var. Yolcularından birisi kusacağı için yolda duran bir sürü turist otobüslerinden gördük. Bense hepsini hazırladığım sandviçleri yiyerek izledim. Asla kusarak israf etmem yediğimi. 😂

Altı saatin sonunda vardığımızda pertimiz çıkmıştı bile. Kendimize hazırladığımız bir günlük çantaları sırtlandık, tren yolunu takip etmeye başladık. Arada yanımızdan trenle geçen zenginlere bakıp el sallıyorduk. Aguas Calientes’e vardığımızda neredeyse akşamdı ve açlıktan ölüyorduk. Önce Machu Picchu girişlerimizi aldık. Kendimize 15 Sol’den kalacak bir hostel bulduk ve eşyalarımızı bıraktık. Sonra diğerlerine göre biraz daha uygun olan bir restoran bulduk. Bir büyük pizzaya 30 Sol verirken içim acısa da ihtiyacımız vardı buna. Sonra hostele dönüp duş aldık ve anında sızdık.

Ertesi gün 15:00’te yakalamamız gereken bir otobüs vardı. Ayrıca Machu Picchu’ya herkes gündoğumunu izlemek için erkenden çıkıyordu. Biz de öyle yapacaktık. Sabah 5:00’te kapıları açılıyor İnka Yolu’nun. Saat 4:00’te uyandık. Başladık yürümeye. Kime sorduysam en zor bölümünün merdivenler olduğunu söylemişti. Çıkarken bir daha buraya gelirsem kesinlikle otobüsle çıkacağım dedim bin kere. İki kat merdiven çıkarken yoruluyorsunuz. 2 saat merdiven tırmandığınızı düşünün. Şilili arkadaş bir ara ruhunu teslim ediyordu. 😂

Vardığımızda saat 6:30’du. Hemen giriş yaptık. İnanamıyordum. Machu Picchu’daydım. Dünyanın 7 Harikası’ndan biri. Yıllarca ayak basmayı hayal ettiğim yer. Sonunda gelmiştim. Dünya’nın en üstünde hissediyordum kendimi. Gerçek anlamda bir dağın zirvesindeydik. Güneş doğmaya başlamıştı. Şehri ilk gördüğümde dondum kaldım. Karşımda tüm heybetiyle duruyor. Hala televizyondan izliyormuşum gibi hissettim. Hani Machu Picchu’nun klasik görüntüsü vardır ya İnka yüzünün gözüktüğü dağlar arkada, önde şehir. O poster ayaklarımın altındaydı.

Şehri dolaşmaya başladık. Binlerce fotoğraf çekerek. Machu Picchu ile ilgili ilginç bilgiler: Şehrin neden inşa edildiği tam olarak bilinmiyor. Bir rivayete göre din adamları ve asiller için yapıldığına inanılıyor. Ama aşağıda dere yatağına rahatlıkla yapılacakken dereden büyük taşları bir dağın tepesine taşımak. Gerçekten akıl erecek gibi değil. Taşların hepsi ise devasa ve mükemmel bir şekilde kare veya dikdörtgen. Şehir, bulunması zor bir konumda olduğu için İspanyol istilasında fark edilmiyor ve ilk günkü gibi bozulmamış halde duruyor.

Çok daha sonraları İngiliz bir araştırmacı tarafından keşfediliyor. Dünyaya açılıyor, UNESCO tarafından Dünya Harikası ilan edilip koruma altına alınıyor. Çok az bozulmaya uğradığı için de İnkaların yaşamları hakkında birçok ipucu sağlıyor. Şehrin o zamanki adı bilinmiyor. Şu anda Machu Picchu denmesinin sebebi ise Quechua dilinde Machu Picchu’nun Yüksek Tepe anlamına gelmesi. Şehirde büyüyen otların normal boyu aşmaması için şehirde özgürce dolaşan 11 tane lama var. Hepsinin kulağında küpesi, küpenin üzerinde de isimleri yazılı. Ayrıca Machu Picchu’nun çıkışında pasaportunuza vurabileceğiniz özel mührü bulunmakta.

Alanı yaklaşık 4 saat gezdikten sonra 2 saatte çıktığımız merdivenleri yarım saatte indik. Aguas Calientes’te soluklanıp öğle yemeği yedik. Sonra yola düştük. Tam saat 15:00’te varmıştık. İki günün yorgunluğu ile 6 saatlik yolda herkes sızmıştı. Vardığımızda bacaklarım sızlıyordu.

Cusco’da biraz daha dolaşmak için iki gün daha kalmaya karar verdim. Ama hava yağışlı olduğu için çok fazla dolaşamadım. Ayrıca çok yorgun olduğum için hostelde kalmayı tercih ettim. Cusco’da Inka Wild adlı bir hostelde kaldım. Yolunuz düşerse mutlaka tavsiye ederim.

Şansıma her Pazar yapılan şehir meydanındaki yemek fuarını görmüş oldum. Bu fuarda tüm gün duran stantlardan çok ucuza geleneksel Peru yemeği almanız mümkün. Ayrıca tüm şehirde o gün insanların birbirine su atıp köpük sıktığı bir festival vardı. Amacının ne olduğunu asla anlamadım. Zaten soğuk memlekettesiniz. Islanmak niye? Ben böyle düşünüyordum ama öğle yemeğimi yerken sırılsıklam olmaktan da kaçamadım ve o halde terminale gidip Lima’ya biletimi aldım.

When I arrived in Lima, I went to the house where my traveler friend Ender had stayed before. The next day, I went to ask about tickets to Cusco and found a bus leaving that same day. I jumped on the bus and headed out. Since I knew I had to return to Lima later to go to the Amazon, I told my host that we could spend more time together when I came back.

After a long journey, I arrived in Cusco and found the hostel where I was supposed to work. The family who owns the hostel also runs a tour agency and they are currently building two new hostels. We had discussed me doing a mural in one of them. When I arrived, there were five other volunteers. Before meeting with the boss, I started talking with them and I quickly learned that things were not as I had been told.

The volunteers explained that the hostels were still under construction and they were just painting the walls, with no art project involved. I had been told there would be breakfast and lunch, but I learned there was only lunch provided. They were staying in one of the new hostels, but it was not in good condition. I was at least hoping to get some discounts on tours, but the volunteers said their agency was more expensive than others in town. Even with a discount, the price would be the same as buying from a regular agency.

I decided not to work there because Cusco is already an expensive city. If I stayed to work for weeks, I would end up spending more money than I saved. I thought it would be better to just visit Machu Picchu, stay a few days in Cusco, and then move on. I found a cheap hostel for myself and went there to rest. I was already exhausted, so I decided to relax and look at my options for visiting Machu Picchu while asking my friends for their advice.

To go to Machu Picchu, you have many options. First of all, the site is a six-hour bus drive away from Cusco. To visit it, you must go to Aguas Calientes, which is the closest town to Machu Picchu. There are two main ways to get there. You can take a bus to the nearest station and walk for two hours, or you can take a train directly from Cusco. Unfortunately, the train is very expensive. If you are a low-budget traveler like me, you have to choose the bus.

Since there is no road leading directly to Aguas Calientes, you arrive at Hidroeléctrica and then walk eleven kilometers along the railway until you reach the town. The path is long, but it passes through the wonderful mountains of Peru. Even if you get tired, you never get bored because the scenery is so beautiful.

When you arrive in Aguas Calientes, you will likely only have enough energy to eat something, buy your entrance ticket to Machu Picchu, and find a place to sleep. Right next to Machu Picchu, there is another mountain called Huayna Picchu. If you want to climb this one as well, you have to buy a separate entrance ticket in advance.

To reach Machu Picchu from Aguas Calientes, you have two options: you can climb the stairs along the Inca Trail or take a shuttle bus. Once you reach the top, you can spend the whole day exploring the ancient city. If you prefer, you can also hire a guide to explain the history.

If you do not want to stay in Aguas Calientes for an extra night and you traveled there by bus, you must catch your return ride at 15:00 from Hidroeléctrica. This means you will only have about four hours to spend at the ruins. However, if you take the train and use the shuttle bus to reach the entrance, you will have much more time to explore.

Let’s talk about the budget. A round-trip bus from Cusco to the Hidroeléctrica station is 60 Sol. The entrance fee for Machu Picchu alone is 152 Sol. If you want to include Huayna Picchu, the combined ticket is 200 Sol. To save your legs and take the shuttle bus from Aguas Calientes up to the ruins, a one-way ticket costs 38 Sol. On the other hand, climbing the stairs for two hours is completely free. Yay! 😆

I am not sure about the exact train prices; since they are famously expensive, I did not even check them. If you prefer a guided experience, a pre-arranged tour costs about 90 USD. This usually includes round-trip transport, lunch, a one-night hotel stay, the entrance fee, and a guide. But basically, whether you go with a tour or on your own, you are following the same path.

After all that general information, I am heading back to my story. I chose the cheapest options I mentioned above. After speaking with my friends, I realized I could definitely do this on my own. I bought my bus ticket from my hostel. Everyone told me that Aguas Calientes was very expensive, so I went to the supermarket to stock up. I bought bread, cheese, fruit, water, and crackers for only 20 Sol. I made sandwiches so I would not have to spend extra money on food there.

I had plenty of food in my backpack when I hit the road. On the bus, I met a Chilean girl who became my companion for the Machu Picchu trip. The road to Aguas Calientes is tough. We were winding around the mountains, constantly turning through sharp curves. We saw a few buses stopping because passengers were getting motion sickness, and I just watched them while eating my sandwiches. I hate to waste food by throwing up. If I eat it, it should stay exactly where it belongs! 😂

When we arrived after six hours, we were already tired. We started walking by following the railway and waving to the rich people passing by on the train. When we finally arrived in town, we bought our entrance tickets for Machu Picchu and found a place to stay.

Later, we tried to find a place to eat. Aguas Calientes is really expensive! We paid 30 Sol for a family-size pizza, which was not actually family-sized. However, we were so tired and hungry that we really needed it. After eating, we went back to the hostel and fell asleep immediately.

The next day, we had to catch the return bus at 15:00. Seeing the sunrise at Machu Picchu is the most iconic thing to do, so everyone goes there very early to catch it. We woke up at 04:00 AM and started walking by 4:30 AM. The entrance opens at 05:00 AM.

Everyone I had talked to before told me that the hardest part was the stairs. They were so right! Normally, when we have to climb just two floors, we already complain. So imagine! We climbed those stairs for two hours straight. My Chilean friend was almost dying! 😂

We arrived at the top at 06:30. Then, we entered the city. I was absolutely shocked. The view was breathtaking. I was finally in the place I had been dreaming of for years. I had always watched Machu Picchu in documentaries and dreamt about it constantly, and now, I was finally there. The city was lying there at my feet. The sun had started to rise, shining over this amazing place.

We started walking around the city, taking thousands of photos, of course. Here are some interesting facts about Machu Picchu. Archaeologists do not know exactly why the city was built here, but they have a few theories. For example, many believe it was built for nobles and religious leaders.

Honestly, building a city on top of a mountain is very strange, especially when building it by the riverside would have been much easier. They carried all the rocks up from the river, and most of them are huge and perfectly shaped. When the Spanish conquered the continent, they could not find the city because of its hidden location. Because of this, the city remained exactly as it was during its earliest days.

After a long time, an American explorer discovered it. Eventually, UNESCO chose it as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Since it remained untouched and was never destroyed, it provided a wealth of information about the life of the Incas. We do not actually know its original name. It is called Machu Picchu because that means “Old Peak” in the Quechua language.

In the city, there are eleven llamas walking around freely. They were brought here to eat the grass and prevent the growth of unwanted plants. All of the llamas have an earring with their names written on them. If you visit, there is even a Machu Picchu stamp outside the city that you can put in your passport!

After spending four hours exploring Machu Picchu, we made our way back down to Aguas Calientes in just thirty minutes. We grabbed a quick lunch in the center and hit the road to catch our bus. By the time we arrived at Hidroeléctrica, we were absolutely exhausted. On the ride back, everyone on the bus was fast asleep.

I decided to stay in Cusco for a few more days, but it was raining heavily and I was still very tired. Because of the weather and my lack of energy, I did not go out much and mostly spent my time relaxing at the hostel. I stayed at Inka Wild Hostel, and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Cusco!

I was lucky enough to catch the food fair that takes place every Sunday in the center of Cusco. I found some cheap and delicious food there. It happened to be a festival day, and everyone was throwing water balloons at each other. I tried my best to escape, but I ended up getting totally soaked while I was eating my lunch. I couldn’t help but wonder: why would anyone want to get wet while living in such a cold city?

Despite the surprise shower, I bought my ticket back to Lima. After exploring the coastal deserts and the high mountains of Peru, it was finally time to head toward the jungle!
